“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is the new 2021 superhero film based on the Marvel comic. The movie has brought major attention to Asian culture, advocating for diversity, and since its release, has been highly spoken of within the Asian community. This new release is the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to represent them.

The costumes for the movie accurately display how they are drawn in the comics which is something many fans loved. Past costumes have also accurately represented the comics, but Shang-Chi incorporates more of a modern twist to the original drawings. For example, in many of the fight scenes, characters are throwing punches and kicks, all while wearing Jordan’s. In the first few minutes after the opening scene, we see actress Fala Chen’s character, Ying Li wearing a straw bamboo hat connected to a mask that was beautifully made. In prior Marvel films, the six original Avengers would be wearing their government-issued and homemade suits like Hawkeye and Ironman. Compared to past phased movies, the costumes have significantly improved.

Many of the costumes shown in new and upcoming Marvel movies have upgraded along with society’s standards. Black Widow, who was portrayed by New York actress Scarlett Johansson, has even publicly discussed how she and many other female actresses have very revealing costumes compared to their male counterparts. Many believe that Marvel’s character’s should not be sexualized since a lot of young girls look up to these heroes.  However, in the new movie, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, many of these actresses were given clothing that represented their culture appropriately and were given roles of strong female leads and encourage female empowerment. 

This movie sets itself apart from all other 24 Marvel movies, this new superhero that we see will be one of the many new faces of the Avengers for new generations to come. Phase four within the MCU does include more diverse characters which will positively affect younger children of our generation. 

This movie overall did super-well not only in the box office, but with the fans’ reviews. Marvel plans on releasing many more projects, and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” storyline was essential for ongoing movies to come.
