Mustangs’ unwelcoming record, welcomes success

The John F. Kennedy Mustangs completed a 2-8 season for the second year in a row. Despite the poor record, the Mustang’s head coach, Michael Henderson believes the season was a success.

Kennedy started the year off 0-7 but three of the first seven losses were close games that were decided by just one score that eventually turned into big wins for the team in their next two games. JFK outscored opponents 42-26 during those two games but unfortunately, the Mustangs couldn’t finish the season on a three-game winning streak as they dropped their final game of the year.

“You can’t determine success on wins and losses, I believe we progressed as the season went,” Henderson stated. “We played very competitive throughout the year, we lost a handful of close games. [Then] at the end [of the season]  you saw those close games turn into close wins which shows [the] maturation of the team.”

The brightest part of the team were the Mustang seniors. Henderson said before the season that Kennedy had a “good core of seniors.” Henderson stated that the seniors “absolutely” lived up to their expectations.

JFK will have work to do to prepare for next year. The Mustangs will be losing senior Evan Richardson, the team MVP, along with the rest of the senior class. Luckily, Henderson believes there is a lot of young talent coming up ready to play.

“I wish we could’ve gotten more wins but that’s the name of the game,” Henderson said. “There’s gotta be a winner and loser in each one, hopefully, we come out on top more next year.”
