The Torch Reviews Iselin’s Very Own Yoan’s Garden

Yoan’s Garden offers a variety of Chinese favorites. Pictured: egg fried rice, lo mein, crab rangoons, and vegetable dumplings.

Yoan’s Garden is a small, comfy eatery offering familiar Chinese and Thai dishes for dine in or take out. Located at 849 Green St #2, Iselin, they have been in business since 1988. We tried a few of their most popular dishes and here are our opinions.

Egg Fried Rice

Egg fried rice is a staple in Chinese cuisine, so we had to order one of those. It came almost immediately and was served hot and fresh with delicious steam coming from it. From the smell and its heavenly look, you know you are in for a flavor fest. The fried rice tastes almost nostalgic, a sense of comfort on the tip of your tongue with a burst of flavor.

Crab Rangoons

Inspired by asian cuisine, crab rangoons were actually, originally made in the United States. Yoan’s crab rangoons came in a portion of eight, with a crispy yellow-orange fried dough on the outside and the soft cream cheese on the inside. The moment you bite into the rangoon, you can hear the satisfying crunch and then the delectable taste that follows. This dish also came with a sauce that was a perfect mix of sweet and spicy. This was Nuha’s favorite among everything we tried.

Lo Mein

Lo mein is a dish you can’t go wrong with when you’re ordering Chinese food, especially if it is from Yoan’s. The vegetables mixed in the lo mein are both fresh and tender with a burst of flavor. The noodles as well are very soft and chewy, and the dish was overall a tasty meal.

Vegetable Dumplings

Vegetable dumplings are a popular dish at most Chinese restaurants. The dish consists of 8 pieces of chewy, cooked dough with small sliced vegetables inside, combining to bring the perfect ratio of dough to veggies. It was delicious. The vegetables were so well done and provided a satisfying crunch to the otherwise soft meal.   This was Ashlee’s favorite.

The Final Review

Overall, everything we tried at Yoan’s definitely exceeded our expectations. The portion sizes are huge, which is good for when you want to share with friends and family. The prices are reasonable compared to other local restaurants in Iselin, and besides, why would you not want to support a local family business? Come down to Yoan’s Garden when you are craving some comforting Chinese food!
