On April 10, 2024, Netflix released a new documentary called “What Jennifer Did” which unravels Jennifer’s plan to kill her parents, and why she was charged with first degree murder of her mother, Bich Ha Pann, and the attempted murder of her father, Huei Hann Pan.
Breakdown of Documentary
The documentary starts off with the 911 call Jennifer made after the shooting which occurred in her home in Markham, Ontario Canada.
The movie then shows Jennifer being interviewed the night the incident happened. Jennifer told police that the people who broke into her home were three black males who then tied her up to an upstairs banister and separated her from her parents. She then heard her mother scream and a sound of “two pops” along with a few more.
Jennifer’s mother was shot dead. Her father was also shot and had fallen into a coma.
She describes how her life was with her parents. Jennifer explains that her parents expected her to excel in her academics, and how they made her end her relationship with her ex-boyfriend Daniel Wong.
Police then interview Wong and ask him questions about his relationship with Jennifer, before and after their relationship ended. He tells police that the reason their relationship ended was because Jennifer’s parents didn’t want them to be together anymore because of the fact that Wong was known as a drug dealer.
After the police interviewed Wong, they became curious about Jennifer’s personal life.
Pan was then interviewed a second time where she told the police that she had lied to her parents for four years about getting into a college and working as a pharmacist. This raised red flags for police because they started to believe that Jennifer was a liar. During this interview Jennifer showed a lot more nervousness and twitching which caused police to be suspicious.
Five days after the incident, police went to the hospital and saw that Jennifer’s father was being taken out of his coma. He tells the police that as he and his wife were begging for their lives from the robbers, Jennifer walked downstairs and started chatting with the men in a friendly manner.
Police were stunned by this and rushed to speak to Jennifer again, receiving a warrant to go through Jennifer’s cellphone.
In Jennifer’s third interview, the police try to get her to confess to the murder of her mother and the attempted murder of her father but she then tries to switch her story and say that the three men were supposed to kill her for being a disappointment, instead of her parents. The police knew that she was making up lies and continued to pressure her until she confessed to hiring the hitmen.
Police discover that Jennifer’s boyfriend, Wong, had found someone who would murder her parents for the price of $2,000. They then discovered messages between Jennifer and the main suspect of the murders,”Homeboy”, whose real name is Lenford Crawford.
But Why Did She Do It?
The truth came out that Jennifer had hired three men to kill her parents. But why?
Police deduce that because Jennifer’s father didn’t allow her to be with Wong, she planned for her parents to be killed. The police are told by Sarah, Pans best friend, that Jennifer’s father gave her an ultimatum that if she wanted to be with Wong, she would have to wait until he was dead.
The truth was that Jennifer planned for her parents to be killed so that she could be with Wong, even though Wong did not want to be with her and had moved on.
The Outcome
Pan ex-boyfriend Wong was charged with first-degree murder and attempt to murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
