Matt Smith is currently a senior at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School. In the fall, he was an offensive and defensive lineman for the JFK football team. In the spring, he was one of the captains for track and field where he mainly focuses on his shot put.
In the future, he plans to be a state police officer in New Jersey. He has volunteered for the police academy numerous times, where he learned about police procedures, how to follow orders, and even had an experience entering a jail. I spoke with Matt about his experiences and how he is preparing to leave high school.
What was your favorite experience in high school?
I would say art class ’cause I enjoyed putting hard work into something and having it up on display. Also, track was another favorite experience. It gave me a way to stay in shape, hang out with friends, and push me in a positive direction.
Have you had senioritis?
Recently yeah. It’s mostly with the work in class. I try to push through and focus on my work.
If you had the chance to redo high school, would you?
Yes, I would in the sports aspect. I feel like I was sidetracked, but I loved the experience.
If your freshman version of yourself was in front of you, would he be proud?
I would definitely say so. The first thing I would say is just to relax, you can handle this, and don’t worry all the time, you got this.
