Lucia Fetic is currently a senior at JFK Memorial High School. In the future, she hopes to work in the film industry. She plans on focusing on screen writing after transferring from Middlesex Community College to a four year university.
I spoke with Lucia to ask about her interests, her high school experiences, along with how she felt inspired to pursue the entertainment industry. Lucia shared her thoughts on mental struggles, high school and gave tips on how to get through the rough battle high school sometimes brings for us.
What inspired you to decide to major in theater?
Lucia: When I was around thirteen or fourteen, I was really into watching movies. I just watched movies all day long. So, I really started to get into the film aspect of things. I really love that film could be anything. You can portray anything in film. I feel like people live through film, and with film, you could experience everything you are watching.
What is your favorite extracurricular activity you are involved in?
I would say my favorite is probably being involved in Key Club, because we are doing good for others and helping out communities nearby.
What genre would you like to screenwrite in the future?
There are so many movies I like from different genres! I definitely would love to do a coming of age, or a comedy-drama. I think if you watch shows like “Succession”… those shows are so funny, but they are real to life and bring a bulk of emotions that are very real, about family issues or relationship issues etc. I really love that genre, it keeps you up with the comedy so you’re not depressed watching it the whole time, you’re in a good mood, but still witnessing dark stuff that happens to people.
What is the most draining part of your high school career?
I feel like coming back out of COVID gave me a lot of anxiety. I struggle with OCD, and I would have racing thoughts all the time about how I looked or how people were looking at me. I had like a lot of self-esteem issues. And for high school, that was very draining. As someone that was very determined in elementary and middle school, it was hard for me to get back in the pace of things, and I honestly still feel like I’m not 100% there. But now as a senior, I feel like I’ve gotten much better at handling it. But not gonna lie, my grades definitely took a dip in sophomore year.
Would you restart high school if you had the opportunity? Why or why not?
No. I feel like where you are in life is because you’re meant to be there. It’s good to think about regrets a little bit because it’s always good to look back on mistakes that you made and work on them later… but staying in the same place or trying something over completely is just not worth it.
What four year university are you planning to attend after MCC?
My dream school is definitely NYU for dramatic literature. A lot of celebrities I really admire like Childish Gambino, Donald Glover both went there, and a lot of famous actors and actresses that I love went there too.
Does anyone in your family push you to want to pursue your future career? If so, who is it?
I would say no one in my close family. But definitely my godfather, he’s a producer for MTV and he’s always been so supportive of people doing what makes them happy, but I think there’s a part of him that feels like I’m going to switch my major…
What high school advice would you like to give to incoming freshmen that you didn’t know when you were a freshman?
Definitely being as productive as you possibly can. The earlier that you start being productive, the easier it can get. I know when you enter freshman year, you feel like you have so many long assignments, especially if you’re taking many challenging classes… but no task in high school is too big. You just have to focus on managing social life and managing school work or jobs. As long as you are doing the right thing and having balance, staying productive… if you slip up, its okay. As long as you are trying your best.
