In the past three years, the JFKMHS FCCLA chapter has raised upwards of $15 thousand for various community service initiatives. One of the largest and most significant initiatives was the block party for the charity, Rent For Moms.
Rent For Moms is a fundraising initiative led by Black women and other women of color to help single mothers in need. One of their main goals, deriving from their name, is to help single mothers pay their monthly rent. It is a way to lift a heavy weight off the shoulders of single moms so that they could use their income on things such as buying essentials and even gifts for their children.
JFK’s famous block party is essentially a party held during the last class of the day in which students can purchase a ticket in exchange for drinks, snacks, and an hour of fun with their friends. The funds raised from this event were directly donated to the charity, and we became the first chapter, or “club” to support the Rent For Moms charity.
Recent Initiatives
FCCLA introduced a new initiative in 2023 to increase the impact they have on the community. Kick For Hunger is a kickball game held by the JFK FCCLA in partnership with FBLA and the Black Student Union. This initiative was created by Resham Desai, FCCLA’s vice president of communications, and Mishree Patel.
Students were required to donate two non-perishable food items and one pair of shoes if they wanted to participate. The pair of shoes went toward FBLA and their community service initiative. The goal for the 2024 game was to raise 200 non-perishable food items, but they surpassed their goal and were able to donate 313 items to the Ronald McDonald House. Not only was this a successful fundraiser, but those who participated in the game had a ball (pun intended).
