After weeks of waiting and anticipation, Amazon has finally released all 8 episodes of “Invincible” Season 3. Episodes 6-8 are some of the most action packed the series has ever seen. With new villains, branching storylines and increasing stakes, the last three episodes of “Invincible” season 3 hope to further supplant why “Invincible” is considered by many to be one of the greatest comic book to film adaptations of all time.
Episode 6- “All I can say is I’m sorry”
Scott Duvall, also known as Powerplex, seeks revenge against Invincible for the death of his sister and niece during Invincible and Omni Man’s battle in Chicago back in season 1.
Although Powerplex does have the ability to generate electricity through kinetic energy, he steals a device from the GDA to amplify his power. Powerplex hopes to lure Invincible into a battle where he wants to make him atone for all the lives that he supposedly killed.
When Powerplex finally confronts Invincible, it does not go as planned. Powerplex’s insatiable desire to make Invincible pay for his “crimes” unintentionally ends up getting both his wife and young son killed. Powerplex is eventually taken into GDA custody, where he is imprisoned.
Reeling from his encounter with Powerplex, Mark must now grapple with the unintended consequences of his actions. Wanting to settle down with Rex Splode, Shrinking Rae decides to retire from the Guardians of the Globe. At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Angstrom Levy is building an army of Invincible variants that he intends to use to destroy Invincible and everyone he loves.
Episode 7- “What have I done?”
Angstrom Levy enacts his master plan by unleashing 18 evil Invincible variants onto our Invincible’s Earth. By doing this, Angstrom Levy officially starts what is known as the Invincible War: A conflict spanning three days in which the Invincible variants lay waste to hundreds of cities and kill millions of people. All heroes on the planet, including the Guardians of the Globe, fight to protect Earth and destroy all of the evil Invincibles.
Rex Splode sacrifices himself to kill “Goggles Invincible.” This heroic action allows the rest of the Guardians of the Globe to escape with their lives.
Atom Eve is injured during a confrontation with “Masked Invincible” and “Omni Man Invincible.” Blaming himself for Eve getting injured, Mark decides to sit out the rest of the war and stay by her side.
At the end of the Invincible War, only eight Invincible variants are left standing. These eight variants are betrayed by Angstrom Levy and sent to an alternate dimension where they are imprisoned.
Mark eventually defeats Angstrom Levy after a lengthy battle with him. Just as Mark appears to be in the clear, the Viltrimte known as Conquest appears.
Episode 8- “I thought you’d never shut up”
Mark fights the sadistic and brutal Conquest. Their battle kills hundreds of people and devastates entire cities. Conquest entices Mark to give him all he’s got, but Mark still holds back. Trying to help his brother, Oliver almost gets himself killed by Conquest.
Atom Eve eventually awakes from her coma and attempts to aid Mark in defeating Conquest. Atom Eve is killed by Conquest, but not for long: Her mental blocks that prevent her from changing organic matter is shed when she endures a great deal of trauma, allowing her body to heal. Still believing that Eve is dead; however, Mark viciously attacks Conquest.
Mark fights with a violent rage that we have never seen from him before, but it is not enough. Conquest eventually gains the upper hand and pins Mark to the ground. While Conquest has Mark pinned to the ground, Atom Eve uses her newfound power to blast him with incredible energy.
The blast severely weakens Conquest and leaves him vulnerable to attack. Provoked by Conquest’s comments about making sure Eve stays dead, Mark unleashes his full power onto Conquest.
Mark violently incapacitates Conquest, knocking him out but not killing him. After Mark and the other heroes recover from their encounter with Conquest, a funeral is held for Rex Splode.
Unbeknownst to Mark, Cecil keeps Conquest’s body in a secret facility rather than destroying it. Mark has a change in his morals: Instead of refusing to kill people under any circumstances, Mark now believes that it is ok to kill individuals who threaten his family or anyone that he loves.
The Review
“Invincible” season 3 is the best entry to the series we have seen. Characters strengthen their relationships and show real development. Rex Splode, specifically, has an amazing character. Rex goes from an egocentric weasel to a charismatic do-gooder who puts his family before himself.
Although the first five episodes went by a little slower than expected, episodes 6-8 more than made up for this. Going from Powerplex to Angstrom Levy to Conquest was one of the most thrilling experiences that I have ever had watching a television show. Mark’s change of heart at the end of episode 8 sets up his character for future seasons and ushers in a new age of “Invincible.”
I am not alone in these sentiments. Many in the “Invincible” fandom praise season 3 and even believe it surpasses the highs of season one. Even the animation quality, which is a huge topic of discussion, improved significantly in the last three episodes of season three.
Overall, “Invincible” season three is a must-watch television series that is leaps and bounds better than all other comic book adaptations that have been attempted before it.
