Originally from Indonesia, Harrel Santoso is currently a senior at John F. Kennedy Memorial High School. I spoke with Harrel to gain a better understanding of his life as an international student at JFKMHS, navigating school while also learning English, as well as his interests and future plans.
Are there any things you wish you could change from time you’ve been at JFK?
Harrel: Maybe I should’ve done my work because I honestly got kind of lazy at the end of the semester of my senior year. Junior year, I should’ve been more locked in.
What is something you would tell your freshman self if you could?
Become friends with teachers. If you need help, don’t be shy to ask for help from your teachers or your friends. And focus on your studies.
What’s been the most memorable part of your senior year?
My Chinese 2 class. That’s the best class ever. There are a lot of good people, except the one who’s interviewing me. I’m just kidding. But yeah… There are great people, and we have field trips together, so it’s fun–It’s pretty fun. People should take it.
Who is one teacher who’s had a positive impact on you?
I would say Mr. Essig. He’s my English teacher. We share a lot [with each other], and he actually helps me improve my English skills because I’m an international student.
How have your friendships significantly influenced you in your life?
I think I have pretty good friends. There’s a lot of positive energy my friends have with me. They actually support me even though sometimes I don’t understand them since English is my second language.
What are some of your hobbies outside of school?
I have a lot of hobbies. I play instruments and sports. One of my favorite instruments is probably the drums. I also love playing the piano to help my church. I play basketball and volleyball outside of school every Friday.
What are some of your plans after high school?
I want to go to college and get a degree. Maybe after that, work and have a family. I’m also majoring in business, specifically entrepreneurship.
Why is it that you chose the major you did?
At first, I didn’t really want to do this major, but since I want to open my own business, I think this major could help me a lot.
What was your proudest accomplishment throughout your four years at JFK?
There’s actually a lot. But I think my top two are that I can make a lot of friends, and my English is actually improving because of all of my friends. So my proudest [achievement] is that I can improve things that were bad before [for me].
Any advice for upcoming freshmen or any underclassmen?
Become friends with the teachers–community is really important, relationships too. Especially later, when you grow up, you really need good relationships. For example, when you need help with work, you will have your friends and your teachers.
