Mia Montanez, School Scoop

Few seniors at JFK will be remembered and Keffa Marcellus is one of those students. Keffa Marcellus is a JFK senior who plays football and runs track. He is well known for his skills during our football games. He is a very generous, kind and caring person that loves to help those in need.

How has your experience at JFK been in the past four years?

Keffa: In the past four years, it has been pretty good, you know, ups and downs. But for the most part, pretty good. I’ve had a great four years of high school with the teachers, made a lot of bonds with the teachers, I’ve made bonds with friends, I’ve lost friends, but also gained a lot of friends, friends for life I would say.

I’ve had a good four years with the football team. We’re not really known for winning …but we’ve had a really good experience and I consider some of those guys my brothers. I’ve become captain of the track team and I’ve never been a captain for any team.

Describe how your senior year is going so far.

Academically and sports-wise it’s okay. Socially it’s alright, I’ve had better years but it’s alright. I’ve been staying out of trouble and having a lot of stuff to do. I’m getting ready for my future and going to the Navy. It’s been great and stress-free, and I’m not really stressing a lot.

Have you enjoyed your time at JFK?

The thing I’ve most enjoyed at JFK is probably the school spirit. There’s no fan or spirit base like JFK’s. You know when you go to football games the school’s there, the school’s being loud. It’s pretty good.

What will you miss the most after you graduate?

The thing I’ll miss the most is gonna be walking around these halls and having, you know, a whole school behind me. That’s what I’m gonna miss the most.

What inspired you to play football?

Honestly my older brother. He’s played since he was able to walk and he eventually played D1 football for Georgia Tech. Sadly, he got injured and he never really got back to what he was good at so, you know, he decided to leave Georgia Tech and pursue a music career, and I know I’m not gonna play college football, but I’m happy that I played high school ball. It taught me a lot and now that I’m going into the military, it just shows that team aspect.

How do you feel about graduating this year?

It’s an emotional rollercoaster. You know, all four years, you grew up with these teachers, they watched you come into high school as young middle schoolers and immature, to graduating and maturing into a responsible 17,18,19-year-old and going off into the world doing better things.

What do you want to do after high school?

I am going into the Navy and it’s what I wanna do for a good couple of years, and probably make it into a career and then I’m probably going to apply to become a police officer.

Thank you for being an amazing athlete, student, and friend Keffa. We hope your journey continues and we at The Torch, hope you have an amazing senior year. We wish you the best and hope you stay safe as you journey off into the Navy. Enjoy your time here at JFK and congratulations!
