The 2024 Met Gala is taking place on May 6, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
As stated by Vogue, this year’s Met Gala theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” where the set dress code for the audience is “The Garden of Time.” Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, Bad Bunny and Anna Wintour will co-host the show. According to Time Magazine, the red carpet event will start at 6 p.m. Viewers are able to watch from the live-stream on the Vogue website and on social media channels.
What exactly is the Met Gala?
According to Vogue, the Met Gala is an annual charity event fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The gala kicks off the years newest fashion exhibit, located in the museum’s fashion wing. Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, has been organizing the Met Gala since 1995. All final decisions are approved by Wintour before being announced. According to NBC Bay Arena, Wintour also has final say over everyone’s attire, so she is aware of everyone’s outfit before they get to walk the red carpet.
Each theme for the Met Gala is created by the Institute’s chief curator Andrew Bolton. According to Vogue France, after years of research, each theme must be approved by the museum’s director and president, and then presented to Wintour. Some past themes include “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”, and “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”
Guests and designers
In order to attend, celebrities or people of status must receive an invitation. Attendees are required to pay thousands of dollars for a seat unless they go with a designer, who pays for their own table, and wear an outfit from that designer. As stated by Time, ticket prices are usually $50,000 for a single ticket, or $300,000 for a table.
According to Time, the guest list for the Met Gala is never disclosed prior to the event, but the event mostly includes the same attendants. Expected guests that have attended the Met Gala in past years include the Kardashians, the Jenners, Rihanna, Olivia Rodrigo and Gisele Bündchen.
Designers that were previously featured at the Met Gala include Vivienne Westwood, Tom Ford, Donatella Versace and Miuccia Prada. Many designers, as well as their designs, are present on the carpet.
