On Thursday, March 28, the Muslim Student Association hosted their second annual Iftar dinner party at the JFKMHS cafeteria for the religious month of Ramadan. For only a $5 entry ticket, students and teachers were able to enjoy food, games, prayer and a nasheed performance. The nasheed was performed by JFK alumna, Amina Khan. Both students and staff were free to come and enjoy the festivities.
Food from popular restaurants such as Namkeen, Khyber, Shalimar and Gyro King were served. The most popular food from the Iftar dinner were the Namkeen chicken wings.
“My favorite food from the Iftar was the chicken over rice, with the white sauce, with a lot of white sauce…that was so good,” senior Mahek Khatri states.
The Iftar dinner party was hosted during the month of Ramadan, which is an important month in the religion of Islam. Ramadan is a holy month where Muslims practice fasting from sunrise to sunset.
Students who were fasting during the holy month broke their fast at the Iftar dinner party with dates, fruit and refreshing drinks. The tables were adorned with colorful table cloth, decorations and candles.
The dress code for the event was traditional, so students dressed up in their cultural and ethnic clothing. Religious traditions and diverse cuisines were shared and celebrated among the attendees.
The JFK doors opened at 5:30 p.m. and students played games such as Jenga and badminton. Students were also able to take pictures in front the decorated gold and black photo wall.
The Iftar dinner had many volunteer opportunities for students to partake in. Students helped set up decorations, serve food and clean up. There were also MC’s hosting and guiding the event all night. After food was served at the time of sunset, Muslim students joined together in prayer. After the prayer, desserts were served and the night came to an end.
